- Homeground Coffee and Kitchen, Windermere
This café has become quite the staple on many of the locals weekend plans since it opened in 2015; the kitchen boasts an all day brunch menu with an American influence in the waffles and buckwheat pancakes. Needless to say that the café also caters for those who prefer their eggs done in style and those whom prefer a ‘sarnie’ to us Northerners, a bacon sandwich to those travelling to us from further afield. There is no such thing as a ‘quiet day’ at Homeground and often the queue for a table trails far beyond the door. If your heart is set on brunching in Windermere to start your day off in the best possible way I would have no hesitation in advising you arrive at 9am sharp! The coffee here is always delicious and they have a broad selection of homemade tray bakes everyday if a cup of tea and piece of yummy cake is what you need to reenergise you after a wander up Orrest Head.
- BAHA, Bowness
Now what a surprise it was to us all when BAHA landed in Bowness last year. This venue opened a classy and modern bar amidst the hustle and bustle of outdoor stores and tourist souvenir shops. Yet, what many people don’t know is that this quirky spot also serves food all day and a dedicated dining area on the second floor for the bar and grill. Nevertheless, if you’re passing by, or just making an excursion to check this out (which we think is more than acceptable!), then you will probably be overwhelmed by the choice of their breakfast menu. The menu itself is quite impressive and caters for almost everyone in the option of continental and cooked dishes, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options so whether you desire a hearty midday feast or a feel good meal. The breakfast menu is available between 9am and midday.

- Mio Mondo at The Coffee Bean, Bowness
This quaint café sits proudly on the side of the road as you go up the hill in Bowness and considering the floor space inside for seating, as more than half the seating is outside sheltered by new panels and heaters (blankets are offered too), the menu is ginormous. Mio Mondo has both a menu dedicated to waffles and a menu devoted to crepes with a delicious selection of toppings, not forgetting ice cream of course. They also serve a wide variety of sandwiches, panini’s, toasties and jacket potatoes at lunch time. For the enormity of the menu and what it has to offer the café really ought to be at least three times its size! If you do happen to visit the presentation of the dishes here is beautiful and showcased by many of the returning guests and regular locals on TripAdvisor – if you’re ever in doubt about dropping in here just check out the pictures and you’ll hardly be able to resist!
- Café Ambio, Lakeland Motor Museum, Backbarrow
You’ll find Café Ambio just behind the Motor Museum next to the river… and at the petrol station at Ings and Junction 36 if you keep your eyes peeled! If you are travelling with a family or prefer a more casual and open atmosphere away from the business of town this place would be ideal for you. The café offers both a short and sweet breakfast menu served until 11.30am, and an all day traditional breakfast and mains menu from 12pm until 5pm. We would highly recommend the Eggs Ambio and Ambio Tomato Pasta, which are both delicious, as well as their selection of homemade cakes and desserts. We have never been disappointed here or had to queue for a table and if you are visiting the area gives you the perfect excuse to combine a trip to the Motor Museum as well.
Cafe Ambio Menus
The Motor Museum in a few words is a time capsule of 140 classic cars and motorbikes and also highlights the important social moments for motors down memory lane. Highlights here are found in the realistic mannequins with historic vehicles, large indoor exhibition area and 1920s garage to name a few features of the museum. A trip here would open any youngsters eyes into life before an automatic car or an aux cable plug, and show them just how people used to travel.
Lakeland Motor Museum
Although, if cars aren’t exactly your cup of petrol, Cliffhanger Rooms is only down the road from Café Ambio and offers adventure games in a variety of themed rooms for between 2 and 6 people. You will be plunged into a room and given 60 minutes to complete the task using clues, hints and codes. A great way to spend a soggy hour inside, or to bring a family or group of friends together for a memorable challenge!
