Brantwood was the former home of eminent Victorian Art critic, social reformer and early environmentalist John Ruskin. A day out at Brantwood can include a walk around the beautiful 250 acre mountainside estate, with paths leading from the beautiful gardens to the highest point of the ridge behind, Crag Head. The house, full of Ruskin’s treasured paintings, furniture, shell and mineral collections, offers an interesting insight into this deeply influential, intelligent and sensitive man. Through the year, there is an exciting programme of art exhibitions, of historic artists, Ruskin’s own work and local contemporary artists. The 7 unique gardens were designed by Ruskin and his cousin and companion, Joan Severn and are places of quiet contemplation and wonder. There are a range of activities in the house and gardens.
Please note, the site is accessible via stairways and sloping paths, and is not suitable all abilities. For those looking to just enjoy the peace and the spectacular view across the Lake to the old man of Coniston beyond, the Terrace coffee house enjoys an elevated position and is the perfect place for a tea, scone and view.
