PARKING: VARIOUS PAY & DISPLAYS IN GRASMERE VILLAGE

General description

This lovely Wordsworth walk offers good views over Grasmere and Rydal. Combine it with visits to Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount for a full Wordsworth day out. In Grasmere, you can stock up on the famous Grasmere gingerbread, and visit the Heaton Cooper studio for paintings of the area.

Directions

  • Starting in Grasmere, leave the village and walk to the mini roundabout at the south end of the village
  • Cross the road and take the first road on the left, almost opposite the roundabout, to go past dove cottage and museum.
  • Continue up the road, at a junction bear left
  • Pass a small tarn, and the road becomes a track. At the end of this continue to the right along a terraced walk, with views over Rydal.
  • At the end of the track, turn right down a road to pass Rydal Mount.
  • Cross the main road, walk right for a short distance and then go through a gate, to cross a footbridge.
  • Turn right and follow the banks of the river and then Rydal water, on a clear path.
  • Lookout for a gate in the wall on your right. Go through this and descend to a footbridge. Do not cross this, but instead turn left on the banks of the river.
  • Follow this to the shores of Grasmere, and continue on to a small boathouse and fence, where the path goes up to a road, turn right and follow the road back to Grasmere village.
