Our favourite places to take photos around The Lakes
The Lake District is home to some of the most impressive scenery in the UK, making it one of the top destinations for photography. From charming villages, to towering mountains and tranquil lakes, every corner has a picture-perfect view.
Whether you’re a seasoned professional, with top of the range gear, or just wanted to capture some holiday memories on your phone, you’ll find plenty of photo-worthy destinations during your travels around The Lakes.
Here are some of the best photography spots in the Lake District you won’t want to miss.
Distance from Park Cliffe: 14 miles, 35 minutes by car
Tarn Hows is one of the most popular photography spots in the Lake District and it’s not difficult to see why. This stunning body of water is flanked by forest. Sweeping fells act as a backdrop in the distance.
Photography tips: Tarn Hows is ideally situated for a sunset photo shoot – the tarns look lovely when the sky turns pink! Hike up to the National Trust’s ‘Commemoration Rock’ for an excellent vantage point – it’s perfect for taking wide shots.
Distance from Park Cliffe: 4 miles, 10 minutes by car
You don’t have to travel far from Park Cliffe to take fantastic photos. There are some stunning locations just moments from the park.
Venture down to Windermere to capture the largest natural lake in England in all its glory. We love taking photos at first light, especially when the water’s still. Frame one of the jetties for the perfect shot!
Photography tips: Shoot at golden hour for the best results. Mounting your camera to a tripod will reduce movement
Distance from Park Cliffe: 27 miles, 55 minutes by car
We highly recommend a visit to Castlerigg Stone Circle if you’re looking to shoot something a ‘bit different’ during your visit to The Lakes. These historic monuments are thought to date back to the Neolithic period and are among the oldest stone circles in the UK.
The stone circle adds interest to otherwise traditional landscape shot. Head out at dawn or dusk to enjoy the surroundings with fewer crowds.
Photography tips: Frame your shots with Skiddaw and Helvellyn in the background.
Distance from Park Cliffe: 37 miles, 1 hour 25 minutes by car
Buttermere is a hit with landscape photographers looking to capture mirror-like reflections from the water’s edge. At first light, there is often low-lying mist above the lake. This along with the calm water, creates a magical photo opportunity not to be missed.
Many visitors choose to include the iconic lone tree in the foreground for added intrigue.
Photography tips: Buttermere looks fantastic whatever the weather. Try photographing it on a cloudy or rainy day to add drama to your shots!

No photography trip to The Lakes is complete without taking some time to photograph one of the many waterfalls in the region and where better than Rydal Falls to start.
Rydal Falls is by no means the biggest waterfall in the lakes, but it’s one of our favourites thanks to the way the water cascades down the rocks.
There’s a Grade II listed glass-fronted viewing house, which is the perfect place to take in the views. It looks extra special in the autumn when the surrounding trees change colour.
Photography tips: Consider a long exposure shot to capture the movement of water.
