Explore historic buildings

The first activity on the list is a visit to Allan Bank in Grasmere, a stunning villa once home to William Wordsworth. The villa is popular with art enthusiasts thanks to the wonderful on-site gallery. The historic grounds are a lovely place to enjoy a picnic and admire the surrounding landscape.

Families looking for a unique way to explore the Lake District should try geocaching at Wray Castle, on the shores of Lake Windermere. This interactive scavenger hunt is great fun for all ages and will keep you entertained for hours! The ground floor of this stunning castle is open for the public. The National Trust have organised a range of activities to enjoy during your visiting, including a climbing wall and the 3D Everest game.

Sizergh is an impressive medieval home near Kendal, set in the grounds of a sprawling 1,600 acre estate. Visitors can enjoy a walk around the impressive gardens, which are rich with wildlife. Inside there’s plenty of opportunity for learning about the past. Younger members of the family can dress up and play lawn games in the sun!

Outdoor games and watersports

We highly recommend a trip to Fell Foot during a holiday at Park Cliffe. This lakeshore park is the perfect place to make the most of the sunshine whilst trying their hand at a host of watersports. There’s plenty of picnic tables for you to enjoy a midday snack. For families looking for some fun in the water, we recommend Stoked Watersport, also at Fell Foot. Here, you can hire row boats, paddleboards and kayaks, and if you’re a Park Cliffe customer, you will receive a 10% discount (please enquire at Park Cliffe’s reception).

Acorn Bank, near Penrith, is another family friendly park where children can discover the local flora and fauna. This is the ideal venue to try to tick a few items off the 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ list. How many have you completed so far?

Other outdoor options include Stagshaw Gardens, Skelghyll Woods and the Roman Fort in Ambleside.

  • Free Wellbeing sessions in the woods lead by Karen Whybrow Coaching.

Wordsworth House and Garden, the childhood residence of William Wordsworth, is a fun-filled experience whatever the weather.
