Autumn is one of the best times of year to explore the Lake District by foot. As the trees change colour, the landscape transforms into a picture-perfect postcard, creating a colourful backdrop for scenic walks.

Orrest Head, Windermere

We highly recommend walking to Orrest Head if you want to experience spectacular scenery, without having to walk too far. It only takes 30 minutes to make it to the viewpoint from Windermere town centre. At the top you’ll be rewarded with far-reaching views across Windermere and the surrounding fells.

School Knott, Windermere

School Knott is well-suited to families with little ones, thanks to the well-maintained gravel paths. The circular route boasts wonderful views over Windermere and incorporates a range of landscapes, including a pretty tarn and woodland along the way.

Gummers How, Newby Bridge

The walk to Gummers How is an excellent option if you don’t want dramatic views without having to travel too far from the park. You can access the public footpath from the behind the children’s play area. The summit is the perfect vantage point for admiring the autumn colours in all their glory!

High Dam, Stott Park

High Dam is one of the Lake District’s hidden gems. This artificial tarn is close to the Stott Park Bobbin Mill and the perfect setting for a relatively easy walk. The path goes through dense forestry.

Loughrigg, Ambleside

Climb to the top of Loughrigg Fell and admire the seasonal colours. It can be accessed via a circular trail from Ambleside and promises spectacular views in every direction. There are lots of opportunities for picnics along the way.

Tarn Hows, Coniston

Tarn Hows is one of the most popular walks in the Lake District and it’s easy to see why. The circular route passes the picturesque tarns – on a still day you can see the autumn trees reflecting on the water.
There is an accessible route for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Stock Ghyll Waterfalls, Ambleside

Stock Ghylls Force is just 15 minutes’ walk from Ambleside town centre making it an excellent option if you’re holidaying in the Lake District with kids. This easy circular walk is well-signposted, so you won’t need to worry about getting lost!

Autumn is one of the best times of year to visit, because the woods are awash with colour. The waterfalls cascade through the rocks and pass under the bridge house.

Grizedale Forest, Ambleside

Grizedale Forest is situated in the heart of the Lake District and a must visit if you’re looking for a woodland walk. The forest is home to a network of scenic trails – providing the perfect opportunity to take in the autumn colours as you explore.

Younger members of the family will love the Gruffalo Sculpture Trail. There’s also a high ropes course if you’re in the mood add an adventurous element to your walk!

Blea Tarn, Langdale

Enjoy a gentle walk to Blea Tarn during your stay at Park Cliffe Camping and Caravan Park. The out-and-back trail is suitable for all fitness levels and affords walkers spectacular vires of the Tarn and Langdale Pikes, without any major climbs! The walk only takes 1-2 hours.

The Hoad, Ulverston

Hike up Hoad Hill to Monument and take in the views over Ulverston and Morecambe Bay. The Grade II listed monument is a replica of the Eddystone Lighthouse and was built to recognise Sir John Barrow – a highly commended naval explorer. The monument is open on Sundays and bank holidays. The walk is quite steep in places and not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.

Aira Force Waterfall

Aira Force, Ullswater

If you’re going to visit any waterfall, make it Aira Force. This spectacular waterfall has a drop of 65-ft and looks particularly effective during the autumn months when the water levels are high. Stand and watch as the water cascades down the rock front – it really is a sight to behold. There are a variety of trails to suit a range of fitness levels as well as a tea rooms, car parking and toilet facilities.
