About Honister Slate Mines & Museum

Pay a visit to Honister Slate Mines, England’s last working slate mine and go deep underground on the historic mine tour! Learn about the 450-million-year-old volcanic green slate which is still mined here.

Located at the head of Honister Pass in the centre of the Lake District they produce the famous Westmorland Green Slate. It’s a beautiful, functional material that has been extracted there for centuries.

They also provide the most thrilling, interesting and memorable Lake District Adventures on offer, whatever the weather. Take part in a number of great climbing activities ranging from high wire bridge walking to cargo nets and cliff edge ladder ascents. Test your nerve whilst enjoying some of the finest views the Lake District has to offer.
